To meet the needs of both current patients and a growing population, the new East Lothian Community Hospital (ELCH) will replace the existing NHS Lothian premises in Haddington (Roodlands and Herdmanflat) with approximately 24,000 sqm of clinical and non-clinical accommodation.
The services provided within the community hospital include a day surgery unit, shared therapy rooms (including physiotherapy and occupational therapy), an outpatient department, inpatient beds (including mental health, medicine of the elderly and medical assessment); orthopaedic/rehabilitation beds, out-of-hours services and a pharmacy.
Rybka have been appointed to deliver the full mechanical and electrical design for the hospital, which features a biomass boiler to deliver heating and hot water to the hospital. In keeping with the sustainability aspirations of both Health Facilities Scotland and the NHS, Rybka are also undertaking a BREEAM assessment on the development.
