Hawthorn House was the first of Glasgow City Councils ‘care homes for the future’ providing both residential and day care facilities to the Possilpark community of Glasgow. The facility is split into 8 operating units each with their own office, utilitarian rooms and resident’s areas which include ensuite bedrooms, sitting/ dining areas, staff control bases and meeting rooms. In addition the facility has a large central cinema room and large kitchen catering for the both Scottish residents and the large proportion of the homes Chinese origin residents.

The building is served from a central boiler house which houses modular boilers, CHP, indirect calorifiers, heating and water pumps, storage tank and sophisticated BMS control centre which allows for remote monitoring of most rooms, sub metering and demand controlled system operation. The care home also benefits from a large southerly facing roof mounted PV array generating a proportion of the buildings electricity demands.
