Mearns House, Newton Mearns

Located to the south of Glasgow, the Newton Mearns Care Home provides secure, purpose-built accommodation for 64 elderly residents. Through considered design, the home enables 24 hour support in a fully accessible environment featuring landscaped gardens. Leisure and entertainment facilities come in the form of a hairdressing and beauty salon, multi-purpose function spaces, hobby rooms, and the Rumbles Café.  

The key design element of the building from Rybka’s M&E perspective is an external stand-alone plantroom containing a wood pellet biomass boiler and store.  Internally, low energy lighting and high efficiency systems have been specified.  A mechanical fresh air supply system is included to pressurise the communal areas in order to mitigate odour migration throughout the building.  Client specific requirements in relation to access control, security and nurse call have been integrated into the design to ensure correlation with the tenant’s operational expectations.
